Already the biggest mobile connectivity player in the Indonesian market, Telkomsel has announced an ambitious plan to restructure and, it seems, enhance its various offerings.
Telkomsel this week announced the creation of a new unit called Telkomsel Ekosistem Digital. It is to be a holding company housing a number of the company’s subsidiaries including its mobile app business.
Telkomsel Ekosistem Digital will, as the telecoms giant puts it, strengthen the company’s digital services offering, bringing together its emerging vertical businesses. Plans also include collaborating with major players across the sector.
Optimising Telkomsel's digital capabilities to drive growth in its business portfolio in various sectors, the new entity will begin with a focus on education, healthcare and gaming.
The company itself suggests that this move will strengthen Indonesia's digital ecosystem, and lead Indonesia to become a digital powerhouse in Southeast Asia.
In fact Telkomsel President Director Hendri Mulya Syam said something on these lines when he was quoted as suggesting, "Telkomsel wants to continue to provide benefits to the community by optimizing its digital trifecta capabilities (digital connectivity, digital platform, and digital service) to encourage the expansion of its business portfolio in various sectors, especially those that can strengthen the national digital economy.”
It certainly looks like, as one report puts it, a manifestation of the operator's seriousness in expanding its digital business portfolio. However, many observers will be interested in what the new structure looks like and how it will meet its stated aims, something that has yet to be explained in detail.
