MTN commits to Ghana’s digital development

Pan-African operator MTN has announced plans to commit $25 million to develop Ghana’s digital ecosystem.

According to Ghana Business News, MTN said last week that it will invest the money over the next three years. And that’s not all.

MTN has also announced that it will put $150 million towards improving the country's network and IT systems, to connect the remaining 15 per cent of Ghanaians across the country who are in the remotest communities and to increase capacity and experience for its customers.

Mr Selorm Adadevoh, the CEO of MTN Ghana, announced this at the launch of the company’s 25th anniversary celebration in Accra, where he said that one of the legacy projects MTN has committed to is the building of an ICT hub in Ghana.

He said the company had always seen Ghana as a market to invest in because of its governance and political stability, policy predictability and consistent economic growth over the years.

In the next three years MTN plans to work with government through the communications ministry to support the development of the digital ecosystem to promote business development.

The company currently serves about 25 million subscribers in Ghana, out of a population of nearly 32 million, and employs over 2,500 Ghanaians. The number of MTN MoMo (mobile money) users is also growing in Ghana, with 15.5 million registered users at the end of March 2020.

MTN Ghana has, according to Ghana Business News, created over half a million jobs, including hundreds of thousands of airtime resellers, mobile money agents and mobile money merchants.
