Nokia and Tizeti announce Nigerian launches

Spectranet and Nokia are to provide 100+ Mbps ultra-broadband services with FttH to home and business users in Nigeria. Meanwhile, also in Nigeria, solar-based internet service provider (ISP) Tizeti has launched a 4G LTE network.

Nokia has announced that Spectranet, Nigeria’s largest internet service provider, will bring high-speed access to customers in Lagos and Abuja by deploying its GPON solution as part of an extensive fibre-to-the-home (FttH) rollout.

Nokia says that the solution will enable Spectranet to provide new ultra-broadband services such as 4K HD video streaming and online gaming to residential and enterprise subscribers in the region.

One of the first ISPs to launch 4G LTE services in Nigeria, Spectranet has been providing wireless broadband services in the country since 2013. With its FTTH technology, says Nokia, Spectranet will be able to address the evolving demands of its subscribers by providing high-speed and stable internet connectivity at affordable tariffs. The company adds that the deployment supports the Nigerian government's Vision 2020 commitment to use technology for the economic growth of the country.

Also in Nigeria, Tizeti, a solar-based ISP, has launched the first phase its 4G LTE network, with plans to extend to leading cities in Nigeria and West Africa in 2020. The first phase includes rollout of high-speed 4G services to Rivers, Ogun and Edo States.

This follows the build of brand-new, solar-powered, 4G-capable towers in Port Harcourt and Rivers State, where Tizeti will offer its first 4G and ISP services, to be followed by new towers in Ogun and Edo.

Tizeti says it is leveraging the large wireless capacity available with Wi-Fi and plummeting cost of solar panels to create a low capex/opex network of owned and operated towers to offer disruptive, customer-friendly pricing for unlimited internet service right across Africa.
