Multiple recent data centre development announcements have underlined the growth of the sector in India. This time Airtel, CtrlS Datacentres and Google are involved.
Bharti Airtel Group's data centre arm, Nxtra Data Centres, has announced plans for a hyperscale data centre in Hyderabad with an investment of 20 billion rupees (about US$246 million).
To be deployed in the next five to seven years, the facility will have a capacity of 60 megawatts (MW) of IT load for the first phase. It will incorporate the latest technologies in cooling and security.
Hyderabad is also a focus for CtrlS Datacentres, described as Asia's largest rated 4 data centre provider, which, according to the Economic Times news service, is aiming to triple its total number of data centres from the existing eight to about 25 by 2024-25.
As part of its expansion, the company's two million square foot hyperscale data centre park in Navi Mumbai is now under construction, while another of about the same size in Hyderabad is ready for construction.
The company has also begun work on a one million square foot data centre campus in Chennai. These three projects will add over 600 MW capacity to the company’s portfolio of assets, it said. It is also setting up a hyperscale data centre facility in Kolkata.
Not to be outdone, Alphabet Inc’s Google has entered into an agreement for a long-term lease of over 28 years of a data centre to be developed in the next 24 months in Navi Mumbai as it expands its cloud infrastructure in India to meet rising demand. Google has inked the deal through its affiliate company Raiden Infotech India.
With this deal, Google Cloud continues to expand its presence in India after it recently agreed a lease of ten years at a facility at Adani Data Centre in Noida. It won’t be alone as more local and international players join the race for data centre space in the country.
