Nokia supplying GPON kit for CG NET’s Nepali fibre network

Following yesterday’s news that CG NET will deploy a new fibre-to-the-home network across the Kathmandu Valley, Nokia has confirmed that it is the sole supplier for the system.

The Finnish vendor will deploy its Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) solution across an area of 5000 square kilometres, allowing CG NET to cost-effectively scale its operations in line with the growing demand for a high-speed broadband network due to increased consumption of video, OTT content, and online education.

Nokia's solution will enable CG NET to offer the fastest broadband speeds in the market, making it a competitive player for IPTV, gaming, remote work and remote education. In addition, it will allow for efficient future upgrades to next-generation technologies and Software-Defined Access networks, leveraging the same access platform.

Nirvana Chaudhary, Managing Director,CG NET, said: “There is a growing demand for high-speed, quality broadband as people are using the internet for every aspect of their lives. Nepal's broadband market is increasingly competitive. CG NET has all the potential and ambition to become a digitally innovative, responsible telecom group.”

Vinish Bawa, Head of Emerging Business at Nokia India, said: “Fibre broadband is being deployed in almost every country. With more than 1,000 broadband projects worldwide, Nokia has the experience and expertise to support operators in diverse markets in addressing their unique challenges.”
