Telecom Namibia Launches International MPLS Interconnect Services

Telecom Namibia has launched international MPLS interconnect services for the first time.

As well as providing international customers with greater local access in Namibia the service also extends coverage within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Telecom Namibia launched carrier IP/MPLS VPN services under the 'Infinitum Plus' brand in 2009, targetting mainly enterprise customers and large organisations in 12 major population centres. The new service extends this by offering international connections.

The service is a result of an agreement with Hong Kong based PCCW Global, the international operating division of HKT, Hong Kong's telecom service provider. The agreement will see Telecom Namibia’s ethernet and IP VPN service coverage extended to meet the needs of its overseas and regional customers via PCCW Global’s MPLS network, which covers more than 3,000 cities in over 130 countries throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

Ernst Nitschke, Telecom Namibia’s Head of International and Wholesale services, said, "This co-operation is one of the important milestones to date in our quest to develop our international business, particularly with regard to international data services. The relationship with PCCW Global allows us to extend the coverage of our services from Namibia to the rest of the world, and we will in turn facilitate like access in Namibia to PCCW Global."

As a customer-centric service provider committed to meeting the increasing demand for advanced services from its home market, Telecom Namibia delivers voice, text, data and video solutions via the country’s largest digital telecommunications network. The collaboration with Telecom Namibia will also enable PCCW Global to provide international customers with greater local access beyond Namibia, with extended coverage to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. SADC aims to achieve economic growth and the alleviation of poverty throughout 15 southern African states by promoting regional integration and sustainable development.

PCCW Global is an investor in the new West Africa Cable System (WACS) which links South Africa to the UK via 14 African countries and important economic hubs along Africa’s west coast. As one of the carriers connected to WACS, Telecom Namibia will now be able to offer an international MPLS interconnect service following its agreement with PCCW Global.

Government owned Telecom Namibia is the only integrated telecommunications solutions provider operating in the country, with a transmission network that is 100% digital. It provides a portfolio of broadband, data and voice over fixed, fixed-wireless and mobile services including 3G and 4G LTE data.
