XL Axiata outlines 5G expansion plans

Indonesia’s XL Axiata has detailed its 5G service expansion strategy as it seeks to extend its offering outside of Java.

We reported earlier this month that XL Axiata had been cleared to launch 5G services in Indonesia and would begin its offering in the cities of Bandung, Depok, Jakarta, Surabaya and Yogyakarta.

TeleGeography now reports that XL Axiata has earmarked Banjarmasin, Makassar and Medan as its next targets for 5G services, based on “the readiness of [their] existing network infrastructure for 5G deployment”. The operator is aiming to offer 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) services to customers in these cities from mid-September 2021.

The operator’s director and CTO I Gede Darmayusa said: “The expansion of the 5G network is part of efforts to accelerate the preparation of the required ecosystem, such as network fiberisation in all operating areas, collaboration with device providers in providing 5G smartphone devices so that customers and the public can easily get them, provision of human resources, to education to improve understanding to the public about the benefits of 5G technology to support daily life.”
