Nokia, Shanghai Unicom complete public EGPRS demonstration

Shanghai Unicom, a branch of China Unicom, recently took the opportunity of a press conference to announce several new mobile services. The services constitute a range of advanced data services based on Nokia's EGPRS solution, including Near Field Communication (NFC), push email, vCard, and WAP browsing. The conference marked China Unicom's first public EGPRS service demonstration.

Nokia intends its EGPRS solutions (including its advanced core and radio network systems) to provide a platform to enhance Shanghai Unicom's data services and drive business innovation. Nokia's EGPRS-enabled S60 mobile devices, the N91, N70, E61, 3250, and 3220 were used in the demonstration, providing an enhanced experience of voice and data services.

EGPRS is a form of EDGE which enables data connections at speeds up to 474 kb/s. EGPRS opens up possibilities for connecting to data networks on mobile phones, making it faster and more convenient to stream video and download larger files. Shanghai Unicom is in turn confident that it will be able to offer a broader range of innovative data services to its subscribers.

Nokia has 61 public EGPRS references, and its solution is used in 51 out of 156 commercially launched EGPRS networks.
