XL Axiata taps Ericsson for 5G transport network

Indonesian operator XL Axiata is using equipment from Ericsson to build out its 5G-ready transport network.

The rollout will commence in the second quarter and is expected to continue for up to three years.

Under the contract, Ericsson will install customer support systems, routers and software to ensure that XL Axiata’s network is ready for the impending increases in data traffic that 5G will bring. The Swedish company notes that its router is optimised for 10G/100G connectivity, as well as the low latency, high accuracy internal clock and IPsec security capabilities required in 5G backhaul networks.

The operator’s director Yessie Yosetya said that XL Axiata’s agreement with Ericsson showed that it was preparing adequately for the advent of 5G. Ericsson’s Indonesia chief Jerry Soper said that “the network needs to be 5G ready for the smooth evolution of the network.”
